Wonderful Weekends: Popular Times | Chicago, IL

A real-world Google Maps Popular Times

Premise

At Wonderful Weekends, Google threw a mini-festival for three days of music, food and fun. Deeplocal created the main attraction, a giant, nearly two-story gumball machine that dispensed prizes from a variety of local Chicago businesses, as well as a number of smaller interactive exhibits.

My Role

The Popular Times exhibit was an interactive physical model of the Popular Times feature in Google Maps. It consisted of 14 rectangular boxes mounted vertically on feedback enabled linear actuators. A user could select a business on a rotary switch and the boxes would move up and down to represent the Popular Times bar graph. I wrote all the firmware to control the rotary switch as well as control the array of actuators.
