Nike Joyride | New York City

Premise

Deeplocal created a massive three-story interactive exhibit for Nike to celebrate the release of their foam bead sole technology. The installation told a fictionalized story of how the foam beads are made: raw foam chunks are dumped into this elaborate machine which churns, pumps and processes them into tiny beads via a complex series of orbs, wires and tubes.

My Role

I designed a custom board and wrote firmware to control LEDs mounted to the faces of three large orb-shaped polyhedrons. The LEDs were configured in various patterns and animated sequences representing “work” being done on the foam chunks. I also specced motors for the churning mechanisms and prototyped various props including a prop syringe that “pumped” illuminated bead fluid into the side of the orbs.
